Christmas Festivities in St Peter Port

St Peter Port’s quaint cobbled streets decorated with pretty Christmas lights and markets full to the brim with seasonal goodies, make Guernsey a lovely place to take Christmas market breaks, capture some festive spirit and stock up on gifts. No VAT and low duty mean value for money and the variety of shops include high street favourites, department stores and specialist boutiques. Towards the Old Quarter lie the winding streets of Mansell and Mill Street where antique and craft shops offer up unique purchases.

Christmas Lights Switch On

In St Peter Port, Christmas begins when Father Christmas arrives by lifeboat, usually on the last Saturday in November, to switch on the Christmas lights. Parading through the town centre accompanied by tunes from the Scout Band and a host of children’s characters, he makes his way to the Square where carol singers welcome him with the grand switch on of the Christmas lights.

Father Christmas also arrives at The Bridge in St Sampson, on the north of the island, where he will switch on the Christmas lights.

Late Night Christmas Shopping

There are two main shopping areas on the island. St Peter Port is Guernsey’s main town and has a wonderful festive atmosphere. Beautifully decorated market stalls line the cobbled streets and spill with artisan goodies whilst the twinkling lights and carol singers capture the festive spirit. The Bridge area in St Sampson is also a small shopping area.

Guernsey’s shops traditionally open from 9am – 5.30pm and close on Sundays. As Christmas approaches, the shops in St Peter Port stay open on Thursday evenings until 9pm and on Tuesday evenings until 9pm in St Sampson.

Find original presents including locally hand painted plates, hand made soaps, Guernsey stamps, jewellery, Christmas hampers, cushions and linen with the Guernsey lily motif and other unique hand crafted items at the Craft Market in Market Square each Saturday from the time of the Christmas light switch on.

A traditional ‘Fresh Fridays’ market runs throughout the year in Market Square, moving indoors to Market Buildings during the winter months. Open Fridays from 8.30am – 2.30pm, this is the market to go for for fresh produce. For the Farmer’s and Fisherman’s Market go to St Martin’s Parish Hall on Saturday’s from 9am – 12pm where you’ll find locally caught fish, Guernsey reared meat produce and home made treats whilst St Peter’s Community Market takes place on Wednesdays from 10 – 11am in the Community Hut behind St Peter’s Post Office.
