Herm Island Gardens

A sub tropical paradise

The tiny island of Herm covering just 550 acres, is a sub tropical paradise supporting beautiful gardens laden with native and exotic plants. From Spring onwards wildflowers take over the island with Violets, Red Campion, Primroses and Daffodils lining the coastal cliff paths and carpeting the woodland. The fragrance of Burnet Rose drifts across the heathland by June whilst the southern cliffs are sprinkled with Sea Pinks, Rock Samphire and Heather. If you’re lucky you’ll see the blue thistles and silver leaves of Sea Holly and rare Yellow Horned Poppies amongst the Marram Grass and Rush in the dunes. By midsummer Periwinkles and Red Campion dance amongst the Foxgloves and Purple Toadflax, leaving the deep orange pods of the Gladdon to colour the Autumn hedgerows.

Award winning gardens

The island rarely suffers from frost and has few native trees having been cleared for sheep grazing. After the First World War Sir Compton Mackenzie took over the lease of Herm and set about restoring the gardens. Trees were then introduced by the next resident, Sir Percival Perry, chairman of the Ford Motor Company, who realised Monterey Pines, Holm Oaks and Monterey Cypresses would offer shelter from the prevailing sea winds and allow sub tropical plants to flourish. Today, all the displays and gardens on the island are successfully looked after by a head gardener with an assistant who have won awards for their efforts. Herm gardens won RHS Britain in Bloom Gold Awards in 2002, 2008 and 2012 as well as Champion of Champions in 2013.

Herm Island Garden Tours

Every Tuesday from mid April through to mid September join head gardener Brett Moore on a tour of Herm island gardens. The mild climate and sea air can be a challenge to plants and thoughtful planting has resulted in colourful structured displays to compliment the natural beauty and wildflowers on the island. Follow Brett on a two hour walk from the harbour up to the hotel and church gardens where you can gain insight into the thought process behind the planting and find out a bit about the history of Herm. There’s a chance to browse and buy plants from the nursery at the end.

“The Head Gardener did not disappoint. It was a joy to listen to his stories and we learned so much about gardening and the life on Herm Island. If you ever have the chance to take the tour, please do so!”

“Its an educational walk while the colours and smells of the flowers are really refreshing as you stroll through the gardens. I had bought some plants after the tour out of inspiration :)”
