An inspirational island

Struggling to write a biography, US author Mary Ann Schaffer decided to head off to Guernsey on a whim only to be stranded at the airport when thick fog descended on the island. Not one to waste time, Mary Ann raided the airport bookshop and discovered much more about the island than she’d ever envisaged in tales of the occupation.

20 years later, having never forgotten the stories she had read, Mary Ann finally embarked on her novel, only to face ill health and ultimately hand it over to her niece, Annie Barrows, to edit and finish. The inspiring tale of survival on a beautiful island under occupation has now been made into a film, ‘The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society,’ named after a very real group of islanders who met together each week to share literature during World War II.
