Peter Rimicans was appointed as head chef at The Merchant House Brasserie. A dedicated chef and qualified butcher, fishmonger, baker and patisserie, he’s previously managed several Michelin starred establishments. Could this be another winner for the island?

Shaun Rankin’s Ormer Restaurant

The Ormer Restaurant has hit the headlines this year and also celebrated its first birthday in style with Head Chef Shaun Rankin winning the Restaurant of the Year Newcomer category at the Food and Travel Magazine Readers Awards. Adding to its prestigious Michelin Star and 3 AA Rosettes, the awards were held in London on 1st September and winning was no mean feat, especially as it was the only restaurant outside London to have been shortlisted! The awards, dedicated to “honouring the best of the best in the worlds of food, drink and travel” (Food and Travel Magazine) also saw Shaun short-listed alongside Tom Kerridge, Simon Rogan, Ben Tish, Nathan Outlaw and Paul Ainsworth for the ‘Chef of the Year title’ which eventually went to Tom Kerridge. Ormer also won the 2014 diners choice award as voted by Open Table diners and was praised for its ‘beautifully crafted’ menus, ‘understated sophistication’ and ‘ambience’. Originally a Yorkshireman, Shaun Rankin says of Jersey:

“When you do visit you will fall in love with this place and stay there. Here I have everything I need: it’s like having a 9-mile kitchen garden.” (

Richard Allen at the Tassili, Grand Jersey

Richard Allen, another Michelin starred chef and executive head chef at the five star Grand Jersey’s Tassili restaurant, exchanged food tips with chef director Marcello Tully from Kinloch Lodge in Skye earlier in the year. Showcasing delights such as Jersey Lobster Caesar with avocado and lobster jelly, the pair swapped tips on their areas unique produce and passion for locally sourced food.

Trevor Howard at Murray’s and Mash!
