Autumn Floral Guernsey Festival

20th – 28th Sept 2014 St Martins in Guernsey

If you’re visiting Guernsey at the end of September you won’t fail to notice the fantastic floral displays all around the island. From hanging baskets dripping with vibrant colours to prolific Clematis and Lily displays, the island (and in fact the Bailiwick) is ready for the Autumn Floral Festival.

To be fair, Guernsey holds its reputation as a floral isle close to its heart with beautiful displays throughout the year. Swathes of daffodils turn into neat rows of tulips, marigolds and roses in the islands parks and gardens as the year progresses with Spring, Summer and Autumn floral festivals celebrating the beautiful blooms.

Formed around 20 years ago, the Floral Guernsey committee encourage the whole community to take part. Providing beautiful displays around the island is only one part of their project. The festivals encourage the islands gardeners to celebrate and pass on their knowledge with a variety of workshops, open gardens, walks, talks and gardening advice open to all.

NCCPG Nerine FestivalRed and pink Guernsey lilies

11th – 25th October

10am – 4pm, Candie Gardens, St Peter Port.

Nerines, or Guernsey Lilies are a favourite on the island and have their own very special celebration towards the end of the growing season. Originally thought to have been washed ashore from a shipwrecked vessel, the Sarniensis variety is a native of South Africa but when it was found to grow well in the Guernsey soil, was adopted as the Guernsey Lily. Joined by hundreds of colourful varieties, the lilies will be exhibited in Candie Gardens at the end of October, with a selection available for purchase.
