Take the boat to Herm and visit the award winning gardens

Every Tuesday from 11am from mid April through to mid September, the Trident boat leaves St Peter Port in Guernsey for a tour of Herm’s beautiful award winning gardens.

Herm rarely suffers from frost and so many varieties of plants from around the world are able to be grown. The tiny island had no native trees of its own and having been cleared for sheep grazing, windbreaks in the form of trees had to be carefully managed. Monterey Pine, Monterey Cypress and Holm Oak have been grown successfully, offering shelter for sub tropical and exotic plant species.

The challenges of creating colourful and sustainable gardens amidst the sea air are plentiful and haven’t gone unnoticed. Herm’s dedicated team of gardeners have many RHS Britain in Bloom accolades under their gardening belts, winning the Gold Award in 2002, 2008, 2012 and then the Champion of Champions in 2013.

Brett Moore, Herm’s head gardener, will guide you on a walking tour around the harbour, manor and church gardens offering first hand advice and an insight into the ideas and choices behind the stunning coastal creations. The tour lasts approximately 2 hours with a chance to browse and purchase Herm grown plants afterwards from the nursery beds.

Costing £7.50, for details and a timetable of sailings contact the Travel Trident kiosk on +44 (0) 1481 721379.
